Historia.
En 1923, el Dr. Vicente Álvarez-Villamil adquirió la finca "Bernabeleva", en San Martín de Valdeiglesias, Madrid, al pie del Cerro de Guisando, junto al Arroyo del Tórtolas, en el límite, pleno de resonancias, de dos provincias romanas: la Lusitania y la Tarraconense. Durante décadas, sus herederos hemos cuidado con cariño las viejas cepas que él plantó, con la aspiración de llegar algún día a hacer vinos honestos, de calidad.
Filosofía.
En Bernabeleva trabajamos las viñas con respeto y en equilibrio con la naturaleza, sin buscar ni colocarnos etiquetas. Los vinos, elaborados a partir de variedades autóctonas, están marcados por las diferencias de orientación, vegetación, altitud y suelo de cada paraje. En la bodega procuramos mantener las virtudes de la materia prima que nos da la viña. Nuestros vinos expresan las características del entorno en el que se encuentran. Nuestra viticultura es respetuosa con el medio ambiente, pues entendemos que no existe otra manera de trabajar.
El logotipo.
Nuestro logotipo representa a la diosa de la caza, a la que se dedicaban los bosques en la Antigüedad, acompañada de un oso, en un rito de exaltación del vino. La dedicación de un bosque a la diosa se indicaba en culturas prerromanas con la huella de un oso en la corteza de un árbol o en algo más perdurable, como atestigua la cercana Piedra Escrita de Cenicientos. Bernabeleva significa literalmente la ruta del oso, donde vive el oso, junto al oso. Los cercanos Toros de Guisando, osos, toros o verracos, y la antigua fotografía de Luisa, la hija del doctor, en su particular rapto de Europa son algunas de nuestras referencia.
El viñedo y la elaboración.
Tenemos 35 hectáreas de viñedo viejo. La variedad de uva mayoritaria es la garnacha, seguida del albillo, la moscatel de grano menudo y la tinta morenillo. Otras variedades aparecen de forma testimonial.Los suelos que forman nuestras viñas son tierras pardas sobre granito meteorizado, con escasos nutrientes y PH ácido. La pluviometría alcanza los 628 mm anuales. Los viñedos se asientan sobre laderas, piedemontes y aluviones. Los suelos tienen diferentes profundidades, con mayor cantidad de arena en los fondos de las laderas. Las altitudes oscilan entre los 600 y 830 metros sobre el nivel del mar. En la viña, realizamos el mantenimiento del suelo mediante laboreo, con aportes de estiércol producido por nuestras vacas, para mantener los niveles de materia orgánica del suelo. Los tratamientos, si son necesarios, los hacemos con azufre y cobre en polvo. Podas de temporada, podas en verde y otros trabajos los ejecutamos siguiendo los ciclos lunares, especialmente en las viñas que van destinadas a un vino de parcela. La vendimia la realizamos a mano por parcelas en cajas de 12 kg. Enfriamos la uva en camiones frigoríficos para favorecer la maceración prefermentativa y una extracción más lenta. Vinificamos la uva de cada parcela por separado en tinos de madera de diferentes capacidades. Las maceraciones son superiores a 30 días en todos los tintos, antes de pasar los vinos a barricas de roble francés de diversos volúmenes, donde permanecen el tiempo que cada uno de ellos necesite.
