Historia.
La bodega Viñas del Vero junto a otras bodegas fueron las impulsoras de la D.O. Somontano en 1985. En 1986, nace Viñas del Vero gracias a la compra de 550 hectáreas en Barbastro. A partir de 1987, se replantan con viñedos de uvas autóctonas (Moristel, Garnacha, Macabeo y Tempranillo) junto a otras uvas como el Cabernet Sauvignon o el Gewürztraminer entre otros. En 1990, nace la primera añada de Viñas del Vero y 3 años más tarde se inaugura la nueva bodega en la cual se elabora todo el proceso de elaboración de los vinos de la marca. Actualmente, cuenta con 8.000 barricas de roble francés y americano para el envejecimiento de los vinos con crianza y a día de hoy la bodega es la 1ª de la D.O. Somontano en volumen de producción. Producen más de 6 millones de botellas/año y cuentan con 1.100 hectáreas de viñedo exportando a más de 40 paises.
Trayectoria.
La bodega se estableció en Somontano a finales de 1986 con la adquisición de 550 hectáreas de terreno en Barbastro y otras poblaciones cercanas. Al año siguiente este terreno comenzó a replantarse con viñedos de variedades tradicionales de la región (Tempranillo, Moristel, Garnacha y Macabeo), junto a otras de distintas procedencias (Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Cabernet sauvignon, Merlot y Pinot noir). Los primeros vinos de la bodega aparecieron en el mercado en la primavera de 1990, y cinco años más tarde Viñas del Vero fue elegida “Bodega del Año” por la Guía Gourmets. Un nuevo y gran paso se dio en el año 2000 con la inauguración de Blecua, la bodega de Viñas del Vero en la que se elabora cierto tipo de vino de producción limitada a partir de los siete mejores viñedos de la D.O. Por su producción, Viñas de Vero es actualmente la primera bodega del Somontano. Actualmente trabaja con 1.100 hectáreas de viñedo (unas 680 en propiedad) y produce aproximadamente cinco millones de botellas anuales. Los vinos de la bodega se pueden encontrar en más de 40 países, ya que el 50% de esa producción se exporta.
Bodega y Somontano.
Los primeros vinos de la bodega fueron elaborados en una bodega experimental de Salas Bajas, y la bodega definitiva se estrenó en julio de 1993 sobre el terreno de una finca, “San Marcos”, adquirida unos años antes. En ella se desarrolla todo el proceso de elaboración de los Viñas del Vero, desde la selección de la uva hasta la crianza y el embotellado. Su característica más destacable es la disposición vertical, con un desnivel de más de 12 metros. Las uvas llegan a la bodega por su parte alta, donde se seleccionan. Entonces descienden por gravedad hacia las diferentes dependencias de la bodega sin emplear bombas u otros procedimientos mecánicos que podrían resultar agresivos para el trasiego de frutos y mostos. Viñas del Vero y otras bodegas de la comarca fueron el origen de la Denominación de Origen Somontano, un sello con 30 años de vida que en relativamente poco tiempo supo ganarse una excelente reputación vinícola. El Somontano es una comarca del Alto Aragón privilegiada tanto por su riqueza natural como por su patrimonio histórico en villas como Barbastro, Alquezar o Torreciudad. Regada por el río Vero y cercana a los Pirineos, presenta unas excepcionales condiciones para el cultivo de la vid. Esta región de tierras onduladas y suelos pardos y calizos, muy permeables, cuenta con una pluviometría de 600 mm anuales y una temperatura media de 11 grados, con inviernos extremados y veranos cortos. En resumen, circunstancias agroclimáticas inigualables para obtener excelentes vinos. En su paisaje se combinan el influjo de los cercanos montes del Prepirineo – Parque Natural de la Sierra y Cañones de Guara y Sierra de Salinas – con los hermosos campos llanos de viñas, olivos, carrascas y almendros que suavemente descienden al río Cinca.
Su proyecto en Secastilla.
Al margen de sus vinos más conocidos, Viñas del Vero desarrolla un proyecto paralelo a 30 kilómetros de la bodega, en pleno Valle de Secastilla, en la zona noreste del Somontano. Allí elabora su vino Secastilla (elegido Mejor Tinto de España en los IWC Awards Spain 2017) y La Miranda de Secastilla, su hermano pequeño. Se trata de un proyecto muy cuidado en base a tres factores: variedades autóctonas, viticultura de montaña y vendimia manual. Las uvas, una vez vendimiadas, se transladan hasta la bodega de Viñas del Vero para su vinificación en las mismas instalaciones que el resto de los vinos de la casa.
