La historia del príncipe del vino.

Chateau Latour ha tenido su historia.Fue mencionado pimero en un documento del año 1331. El señor del castillo, Gaucelme de Castillon, dio permiso para construir una torre dentro del castillo para defender la región, durante la Guerra de los Cien Años. Trescientos años más tarde, la finca pasó a manos de Alexandre de Segur, al que el rey Luis XV le dio el titulo "Príncipe del vino". El Chateau Latour pasó por muchas manos y familias, en el siglo 20 la bodega pertenecía a los británicos hasta que finalmente regresó a propiedad francésa. La familia del Príncipe de vino, Segur, recibió acciones de 7%. Château Latour está situado en el Haut-Médoc Pauillac. El viñedo tiene 90 hectáreas en producción, estando 47 hectáreas alrededor del castillo, llamado "l'Enclos", están reservados a la producción de Grand Vin. Algunas vides tienen más de 100 años. En la plantación predomina el Cabernet Sauvignon, con un 80%, siendo el Merlot el segundo, con un 15% de la superficie. En cuanto a la Cabernet Franc y Petit Verdot, representan sólo el 5% de las plantaciones.

La torre que da su nombre.

El château debe su nombre a la torre que se encuentra en el centro del patio del propio castillo, vestigios de una fortaleza construida en el siglo XII por los antecesores de Montesquieu. Este punto era y sigue siendo estratégico en la carretera que une Burdeos y Toulouse. Además, las piedras de los fortines que por allí se ubicaban sirvieron en pleno siglo XVIII para construir el castillo tal y como lo conocemos hoy en día. En el año 1953 le fue otorgada la categorización de Grand Cru Classé, que la distingue como una de las mejores bodegas de Burdeos. En 1871 llega a Martillac Edward Kressmann, comerciante establecido en Burdeos. Seducido por los vinos blancos de la zona, decide plantar en sus terrenos sus propias vides para elaborar su vino. Con el paso del tiempo fue Alfred, hijo de Edward, el encargado de gestionar la bodega a partir de 1930. Hasta entonces el château había compartido nombre con su homónimo de Médoc, por lo que Kressmann toma la decisión de añadir como sufijo el nombre de la localidad de Martillac para evitar confusiones. Por aquel entonces contaban con 15 hectáreas de terreno en propiedad, la mayoría de ellas con vides de uva blanca, así que el bodeguero decide plantar Cabernet sauvignon y Merlot. Cuando Jean Kressmann tomó las riendas del negocio familiar en 1954 amplió su viñedo y consiguió contar con casi 30 hectáreas. Apasionado de la elaboración del vino, Kressmann es reconocido por sus tintos de añadas en los años sesenta, setenta y ochenta. Su favorito fue el resultante de 1983. Él fue uno de los responsables de que la Denominación de Origen Pressac-Léognan fuera reconocida y establecida. De igual manera impulsó el reconocimiento de la Denominación de Origen de Graves, bajo la que se encuentran 16 châteaux. En la actualidad son seis descendientes de los Kressmann quienes dirigen la bodega. Ellos han decidido continuar con la tradición familiar para seguir elaborando vinos fieles a la tradición de su zona geográfica y a las variedades de uva que vienen plantando desde la fundación del château.
